Centro celebrates Día de los Muertos with calavera face paint

Today is the final day of the Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead holiday. Although the traditions were born from Mexican heritage, the holiday is celebrated across cultures as an opportunity to reflect and honor those who have passed.

The students of Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos learned about the holiday beyond just face value by embracing the tradition of calavera face paint. Spanish for skull, calaveras are a representation of the human skull, often represented as sugar skulls on ofrendas, Spanish for offering.

Student and teacher Melanie Cortinas helped students learn about the holiday by painting their faces with flowers and swirls, transforming students into living representations of the dead.

Centro will be assisting the San Pedro Cemetery for their Flores y Ofrendas event Sunday Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. The cemetery is located at the North West corner of Posey Road and Old Bastrop road. The event is open to anyone in the public looking to honor their dearly departed.
