Bobcats look to break Cajun Curse and snap losing skid

TXST FOOTBALL

For perhaps the final time, the Bobcats will get one final shot to snap the dreaded Cajun Curse and get that elusive win over their border neighbors.

Looking to break their four-game losing streak, Texas State will travel on the road to Lafayette to take on the Cajuns with both teams fighting for bowl eligibility.

The Cajuns kept their season alive last week with a 31-22 win over the South Alabama Jaguars. The victory improved the Cajuns record to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play. After losing starting quarterback Walker Howard, the Cajuns have turned to quarterback Lunch Winfield, who has emerged as the team’s spark on offense.

Winfield has passed for 903 yards and seven touchdowns while rushing for 453 yards and five touchdowns. Against South Alabama, Winfield passed for 232 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 45 yards and one touchdown.

Running back Zylan Perry has also helped carry the offense, leading the team in rushing with 96 carries for 543 yards and seven touchdowns.

Winfield’s main target through the air has been wide receiver Shelton Sampson with 19 catches for 362 yards and three touchdowns followed by Robert Williams with 17 catches for 269 yards.

Through nine games, the Cajuns have averaged 24.3 points per game compared to the Bobcats average of 34.1 points per game.

On defense, linebacker Jaden Duggar leads the team with 84 total tackles along with 40 solo tackles.

The Cajuns on defense hold opposing offenses to 29.3 points per game compared to the Bobcats at 33.8 points per game.

The series history between the Bobcats and the Cajuns dates back to 2013 when Texas State joined the Sun Belt Conference. Because of their geography, the Bobcats and Cajuns have played annually since 2013.

Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the series has not gone in favor of Texas State. The Cajuns have won 12 straight games against Texas State since the series started in 2013, while the Bobcats have been unable to come away with a win.

The last two meetings between the Bobcats and the Cajuns both ended in one-possession wins for the residents of Lafayette.

Kickoff for the Bobcats and Cajuns is set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Cajun Field.
