San Marcos author, educator wins first place in international video competition
KELLY STONE

San Marcos native Kelly Stone has been awarded first place in the international My EuropeanUniversity video competition hosted by the European University Alliance for Global Health(EUGLOH).

Representing the University of Porto (Portugal), Stone’s short comedic mockumentary, “Foreign-Body,” spotlights her experience as an American PhD student in Portugal while navigating the realities of perimenopause. The competition invited students from EUGLOH partner universities across Europe to portray what a “European University” means in practice.

When presenting Stone with the award, one of the organizers told her: “I promise you, there is life after menopause!” Stone is a former lecturer at Texas State University, the author of the local children’s book ‘Goodnight San Marcos’, and a recipient of the SMart Advocacy Award from the San Marcos Arts Commission. She is completing a PhD in Human Sexuality at the University of Porto, where her dissertation examines stand-up comedy as sex education.

“This award is truly an honor,” Stone said. “I entered the competition because it offered a rare chance to merge my research and screenwriting, allowing me to create a piece of edutainment that helps normalize our bodies and health experiences through humor.”
