The San Marcos Daily Record staff gives recommendations on what to do in our community
DANCING AND A 5K
I’ve got some dancing and fun for those looking for a more leisurely activity and something active for you exercise buffs out there. San Marcos Parks and Recreation is hosting a free Adults with Disabilities Dance from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins St. There will be a DJ, door prices and fun, according to the Facebook post. There will be concession items like candy, cookies, chips and sodas available for $1 each. Participants who are in need of assistance must be accompanied by an assistant.
At 9 a.m. on Saturday, there will be a Thankful Turkey 5K and Kids Run at First Baptist Church San Marcos, 325 W. McCarty Ln. Each first-place winner in every age group gets a turkey, a ham for second place and a pie for third. It’s a $35 fee for adults, but kids run for free. All proceeds will go back into the San Marcos community to benefit local and Lions’ charities and youth programs. Learn more at tinyurl.com/3va2m33a.
FASHION SHOW & SALSA NIGHT
Fashion fans, this weekend it for you. The TXST Fashion Merchandising Association is back with their biannual fashion show. This season’s theme is ‘Dream Logic,’ inspired by the strange yet familiar feeling of a dream. The show is Saturday at the Price Center at 7 p.m. and tickets are limited. See student work in action from upcoming designers, models, stylists and makeup artists.
The TXST Latin Music Studies organization is bringing the HEAT with Salsa Night this Sunday at The Marc. Starting at 6 p.m. the public is welcome to come dance the night away to salsa ensembles. This will be a special event since alumni are encouraged to attend to be a part of the mix. The event is free for 21+ but those under 21 the cost is $5. There will even be an opportunity for free salsa dance lessons at the start of the event, no experience or partner needed.
BOB DYLAN SONG CELEBRATION
“May Your Song Always Be Sung,” a TXST showcase of Bob Dylan songs, takes place today from 6:30-9:00 p.m. in the Honors College Coffee Forum in Lampasas Hall. The showcase is inspired by professor Jon Lasser’s class titled “The Art of Bob Dylan: Explorations of Method and Performance.”
Lasser has published several articles on Dylan, including “Shakin’ on Your Bones: Bob Dylan and Embodied Experience,” “And the Nobel Prize in Literature Goes to... Bob Dylan!” and “Rumplezimmerman, Alchemy, and Dylan’s Bidirectional European Influences.” This is a free event with musicians of all levels playing the songs of Dylan. Performances will be divided into two sets, electric and acoustic. Free food and great music!
