SMA ATHLETICS

San Marcos Academy is proud to announce that Carson Tinker has joined the Bear Family as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, bringing with him a legacy of excellence, perseverance and faith-driven leadership that perfectly reflects the mission and values of SMA.

A standout at the University of Alabama, Tinker was part of three BCS National Championship teams under Coach Nick Saban (2009, 2011, 2012). His remarkable journey from walk-on to starting long snapper in one of college football’s most storied programs became a powerful testimony to hard work, humility and servant leadership. During his time with the Crimson Tide, he played a pivotal role in special teams success and was recognized for his leadership both on and off the field.

Following his collegiate success, Tinker went on to enjoy a decade-long football career in the NFL, earning a reputation for consistency, integrity and team-first commitment. After signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2013, he went on to play 10 NFL seasons across multiple organizations — including the New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Las Vegas Raiders, Seattle Seahawks, and Los Angeles Rams — with whom he became a Super Bowl LVI Champion. Known for his resilience, Tinker overcame multiple injuries throughout his career while continuing to serve as a model of perseverance and faith under pressure.

Now stepping into his new role at San Marcos Academy, Coach Tinker brings that same passion for excellence and mentorship to the next generation of student-athletes — guiding them to pursue victory with integrity, humility and heart.

“Carson’s story is one of courage, perseverance and faith. He knows what it means to compete at the highest level, but more importantly, he understands the deeper purpose of athletics — to shape character and strengthen community,” said President of San Marcos Academy Dr. Brian Guenther. “His heart for service and his passion for mentoring young people align beautifully with our mission at San Marcos Academy. We are thrilled to welcome Carson Tinker into the Bear Family.”

At San Marcos Academy, athletics serve as a platform for developing leaders of character — students who compete with integrity, pursue excellence and reflect Christ in all they do. Carson Tinker shares that vision wholeheartedly.

In his role as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, he will: champion a Christ-centered culture of faith, family and excellence throughout all athletic programs; mentor coaches and student-athletes to value character over accolades and teamwork over titles; strengthen community partnerships to ensure continued growth and excellence in facilities and programs; and build on the proud tradition of Bear Pride, cultivating spirit, sportsmanship and unity across all levels of SMA athletics.

“I’m honored and excited to join the San Marcos Academy community. The values of faith, family, and future are close to my heart, and I look forward to working alongside our coaches, teachers, parents, and students to continue building something special here,” Tinker said. “My hope is that every Bear athlete leaves this campus not only as a better competitor— but as a stronger person of faith and character.”
