Former San Marcos Rattler football player Tony Diaz was named the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year.

Diaz played for the UTRGV Vaqueros during the program’s first season playing football. Diaz caught 67 passes for 881 yards and 11 touchdowns, which were team highs in all three categories. His stats also put him in the Top 25 nationally in FCS for catches [9th], receiving yards [21st] and touchdowns [4th]. Against Incarnate Word, Diaz caught 17 passes for 172 yards and one touchdown.

Diaz helped the Vaqueros to a 9-3 overall record, good for a thirdplace tie with Lamar in the conference standings.

Diaz was also named 1st team All-Conference for the Southland and is a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award, given to the most outstanding freshman player in FCS.

UTRGV is coached by Travis Bush, who has previously coached for both the Rattlers and the Texas State Bobcat.
