COMMUNITY NONPROFIT

For 14 years, Operation Turkey San Marcos has made sure that anyone who needs a Thanksgiving meal can get one.

This year, the nonprofit prepared about 2,000 Thanksgiving meals for those in need in San Marcos and the surrounding areas.

About 2,000 turkeys were donated to Operation Turkey, starting in Austin before making their way to San Marcos, San Antonio and Houston, with more than 100 coming to San Marcos.

“It’s a great way to get your family involved to volunteer,” Clint Forsyth said. “That’s why we started. I came here 12 years ago with my kids to have them see what volunteering is like, and we haven’t stopped. This is our Thanksgiving tradition.” The Rattler baseball team showed up early on Wednesday morning to help clean the turkeys before volunteers began the first of two fourhour cook-offs smoking the turkeys in the parking lot of Texas Roadhouse. Hundreds of pies were donated by Bake A Wish in Austin and more volunteers showed up Wednesday night to debone the turkeys and prepare Thanksgiving meals. Thursday morning, volunteers delivered those meals across the community. In total, an estimated 200 volunteers participated.
