Texas State University has unveiled Market NXT on the west side of campus, a new convenience store powered by Chartwells Higher Education and featuring Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology. This innovative addition allows students and staff to quickly shop for food and personal care items without waiting in line, enhancing the campus dining and shopping experience.
Students and staff enter the Market NXT using a Texas State University student ID, debit or credit card and select their items. Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology detects what shoppers take from or return to the shelves and creates a shopping session. Guests can grab snacks, sandwiches, wraps, yogurt, bottled beverages, coffee and even personal care items. When guests finish, they simply leave the store without waiting in line, and the payment method used to enter the store is charged for the items taken.
Amazon’s Just Walk Out Technology uses artificial intelligence such as computer vision and deep learning techniques, including generative AI, to accurately determine who took what in any retail environment. This technology is designed to eliminate checkout lines and allow guests to spend less time shopping and more time getting on with their busy lives. Just Walk Out technology allows the Market NXT to be staffed as usual or operate partially unattended.
The ribbon cutting was attended by Texas State University President Dr. Damphousse, Vice President for Student Success Dr. Cynthia Hernandez, and Associate Vice President for Student Success and Chief of Staff Dr. Bill Mattera. Also, onsite to celebrate the grand opening was Senior Vice President of Chartwells Higher Education Shannon Mariani and Tom Cabral from Amazon Just Walk Out.
