BREAKFAST SHOWDOWN OF XMAS ICONS

WHAT’S HAPPENINGTHISWEEKEND?

The San Marcos Daily Record staff gives recommendations on what to do in our community

MUSIC & EVENTS on Page 4 BREAKFAST SHOWDOWN OF XMAS ICONS

Blueberry salvos will be blasted across town, followed by volleys of crushed pecans before the combatants roll out their half stacks and side orders in this breakfast battle of bitter Christmas rivals.

All was good cheer and holiday spirit when the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos announced their “Pancakes with Santa” event Saturday at the First United Methodist Church. Kris Kringle himself will be giving away free pancakes and sausage from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.

However, Grinch cast a green shadow over this red holiday happiness by scheduling a Pancake Breakfast on the very same morning at Cuauhtemoc Hall. The Mean One will pretend to have fun in games and give away door prizes last seen under Christmas trees in Whoville. Note that the Grinch likes to sleep in on Saturday, so this “Grinchmas” feast will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 1100 Patton St.

Santa’s pancakes will feature sugar and spice and everything nice, at least what’s left of them after the Grinch’s late-night raid. Will these arch rivals make peace before breakfast? Come eat some delicious pancakes and find out for yourself.

CLASSIC AND TEJANO CHRISTMAS EVENTS

I’ve got an event for y’all that’s holiday-themed with a Mexican twist. A Very Merry Tejano Christmas will be happening from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday at 108 South Frontage Road, Kyle. According to the Facebook post, there will be Tejano music, food, family fun and plenty of holiday shopping opportunities. As the post put it, “grab your cowboy boots, your Santa hat, and your crew — it’s time to fiesta like it’s Navidad!”

This is also the final weekend for Sights and Sounds, from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. There will be performances, Old Bethlehem, tons of sparkling lights, plenty of snacks, a carnival and holiday vendors. You don’t want to miss it now that it’s back to its full size after having a mini-event last year.

FUN-DRAISER & ART NIGHT

Local musician collective &bops is putting the FUN in fundraising by hosting a Mutual Aid Benefit this Saturday at Wake the Dead Coffee House. From 4 to 9 p.m., enjoy a mix of live music from local beat makers and electronic wizards including Kinder, KUVU, Geoff B, Soralia, Boone’s World, Little Jack Heart Attack and Chief and The-DoomsdayDevice. Funds raised will help the Hays Free Fridge Project. This event is a prime example of how special the creative culture is in San Marcos and how local musicians can use their grooves for good.

After the event, make your way to MotherShip Studios from 7 to 11 p.m. for the opening night party of their new curated exhibit, Scrappy: By Any Means Necessary. This show is sponsored by a grant from the San Marcos Arts Commission and is a way for San Marcos to showcase the Central Texas art scene. Come ready to mix and mingle with the artists, enjoy a donation-based bar and artwork from paintings to sculpture and everything in between. The show will be up until Feb. 7th but the opening party will be one to not miss!
