ROTARY CLUB OF SAN MARCOS
The Rotary Club of San Marcos donated $5,000 to the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance on Nov. 13. Half of the funds came from a grant from Rotary District 5840 and the rest was raised by Rotary locally. The funds are to be used for materials, signage and tools to construct new and maintain existing trails in San Marcos.
”The San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance is very grateful to the Rotary Club for this gift,” SMGA president Jon Cradit said. “We look forward to using it to purchase tools and other things we need to create and improve our trails.”
Since 1998, the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance has been working to create and maintain interconnected parks and natural areas. The Greenbelt system in San Marcos includes 10 natural areas — with a couple more in the works — 3000 acres, and more than 30 miles of trails. SMGA is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), all-volunteer organization that survives, on “membership dues, donations, grants, perspiration, brains and brawn of people who understand the value of the natural world,” according to their website.
San Marcos Rotary is more than 100 years old and is also a nonprofit organization. It provides funding for food programs, scholarships and a variety of other humanitarian and community needs.
