Rattlers compete at I-35 Shootout

SMHS BOYS BASKETBALL

The Rattlers competed at the I-35 Shootout at Devine High School last weekend, coming out of the tournament with a 23 record.

San Marcos overall record goes to 7-10 for the season as the Rattlers look to wrap up non-district play this week.

In the first game of the tournament, the Rattlers faced the San Antonio Harlandale Indians, with San Marcos losing 6250.

Senior Peter Aguilar led the team in scoring with nine points followed by senior Ernest Lozano with eight points. Senior Jordan Bernal was third in scoring with seven points.

Freshman Tytan Crayton led the team in rebounds with nine while sophomore Cameron Bundage led the team in assists with three.

The Rattlers were able to bounce back in the next game as San Marcos defeated Laredo Cigarroa 68-53.

Lozano led the team in scoring with 18 points followed by Aguilar with 12 points and Crayton with 10 points. Lozano was 6-12 from threepoint range. Junior Jerimiah Josiah and Crayton led the team in rebounds with nine each while Bundage was third with seven.

The next day of tournament play, San Marcos opened with Crystal City in a thrilling overtime game which the Rattlers lost 70-65.

Once again, San Marcos regrouped from the loss in the following game, defeating the Zapata Hawks 85-30.

Senior Tim Cooper led the team in scoring with 20 points followed by senior Elijah Valenzuela with 12 points and Crayton with 10 points. Crayton also led the team in rebounds with 11 to complete the double- double. Junior Andre Salmon led the team in assists with four.

In a rematch with Crystal City on the final day of the tournament, the Rattlers and the Javelinas battled in a thrilling game with San Marcos falling 52-51.

Cooper led the team in scoring with 13 points with Bernal coming in second with 10 points. Bernal also led the team in assists with four.

Bundage led the team in rebounds with 10, including eight defensive rebounds.

San Marcos will be back on the road Tuesday against San Antonio Southwest Legacy. The Titans enter the game with an 11-7 overall record.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Southwest Legacy High School.

The Rattlers finished the I-35 Shootout with a 2-3 record. San Marcos will wrap up non-district play next week at the Hays Hangry Joe’s Christmas Classic. Daily Record photo by Gerald Castillo
