WHS BOYS BASKETBALL
The state-ranked Texans captured their second tournament championship of the season, winning the North Shore Classic in Lago Vista last weekend.
The No. 10 ranked Texans finished the weekend improving their overall record to 15-1.
Before the tournament, Wimberley started the week on the road against the Bastrop Bears, ending with the Texans winning 71-37.
Senior Paul Gumbert-Mendoza led the team in scoring with a gamehigh 31 points. Junior Reece Wortham was second in scoring with 14 points followed by junior Nathan Baker with 11 points.
Senior Micah Birdsong led the team in rebounds with nine followed by Wortham coming in second with six. Wortham and senior Holden Crawford were first in assists with five each.
In the first game of the North Shore Classic, the Texans faced the China Spring Cougars with Wimberley winning 7448.
Wortham led the team in scoring with 19 followed by Gumbert-Mendoza with 16. Crawford was third in scoring with 13 while Baker was fourth with 10 points.
Wortham also led the team in rebounds and assists with seven each.
The Texans followed up their win with another victory, beating the Salado Eagles 65-48.
Gumbert-Mendoza led the team in scoring with 23 points followed by Wortham with 15 and Baker with 12.
Gumbert-Mendoza also had team highs in both rebounds and assists with eight apiece.
Returning for Day Two of the North Shore Classic, Wimberley started Friday play with another win, beating the Rockdale Tigers 78-38.
Junior Harley Peacock led the team in scoring with 20 while Baker was second in scoring with 15.
Wortham led the team in both rebounds and assists with eight and seven apiece.
In the second game of the day on Friday, the Texans came away with a hard-fought win over the Georgetown Gateway Gators 47-45.
Gumbert-Mendoza once again led the team in scoring with 21 points followed by Wortham with 12 points.
Baker led the team in rebounds with seven while the duo of Crawford and Wortham led the team in assists with three apiece.
In the championship game, Wimberley faced a familiar opponent in the Burleson Elks. The Texans played the Elks earlier in the season at the Battle of Bay Tournament in Aransas Pass with Wimberley winning 62-49. Though the Elks looked to gain revenge, Wimberley denied them the satisfaction as the Texans won 49-24.
Gumbert-Mendoza led the team in scoring with 24 points while also leading the team in assists with six. Baker was second in scoring with 17 points while Wortham led the team in rebounds with four.
Both Baker and Wortham made the alltournament team while Gumbert-Mendoza was named the North Shore Classic MVP.
The Texans are back home in Texan Gym this week with a pair of nondistrict games before Texan Hoop Fest next week.
Wimberley is set to host Navarro at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night before hosting Burnet at 3 p.m. Friday.
