STORIES OF THE YEAR
2025 will go down as a historic year in Wimberley Texan athletics. Four programs played for a state title, two of which played for the state championship for the first time in history.
The lone program to win a state championship this year in Wimberley was Texans Team Tennis.
Playing in their fourth state tournament in the last five years, the Texans defeated the Canyon Eagles 10-5 to capture the program’s third ever state title and their third championship in the last five years.
Earlier in the year, the team of Marcus Gonzales and Brandon Kircher won the state championship in Boys Doubles while Tyler Youens advanced to state in Boys singles. The team of Kennedy and Kate Carson placed second at state in Girls Doubles while Logan Carpenter and Kynley Craddock advanced to state semifinals in Mixed Doubles.
Wimberley Lady Texan soccer made history and advanced to the 4A Division II State Championship game. The Lady Texans won a record 24 games, finishing the season with a 24-2-2 overall record with their lone regular season loss coming against Captain Shreve High School in Louisiana.
The Lady Texans advanced all the way to the state championship for the first time in program history where they fell to Canyon Randall in penalty kick shootout.
Joining the Lady Texans soccer team was the Wimberley Texans baseball team.
The Texans captured a share of the district championship in a threeway tie before Wimberley caught hot in the playoffs. The Texans caught fire in the playoffs where they defeated powerhouses Sweeny and Sinton to capture the regional title before defeating the Bridge City Cardinals on a walk-off to advance to the state championship game. Wimberley fell to Longview Spring Hill in the state title game.
Rounding Wimberley’s state finalist is the Texans volleyball team. The Texans won a program record 46 games to finish the season 46-6. After defeating Davenport to capture the outright district championship, Wimberley won 24 straight sets, including their playoff run where the Texans didn’t drop set up until the state championship game. Wimberley fell to Eagle Mountain in the state title game.
The Texans track team placed second overall at state as several athletes competed at the state meet. Nolan Waida led the charge for the Texans, qualifying for five different events in the Long Jump, Triple Jump, 200M run, 800-M relay and the 1,600-M relay. The Texans Sprint Relay team of Waida, Ethan Talley, Dane Duggar and Bryson Anderson placed third in the 800-M relay then second in the 1,600-M relay. Waida took third place in the triple jump, fifth in long jump and the 200M run. Charlie Hanle took second place in the pole vault.
Corina Joyce took 6th place at the state meet in the 3,200 meter-run while also qualifying for the UIL State Cross Country later that year, placing 16th. Along with Joyce, Avery Whitmore, Addy Wymore, Kate Sharp, Adriana Burnette, Ava Arellano and senior Whitlee Leonard all qualified for the state meet with the Lady Texans placing 12th as a team.
Also making history was the Texans boys basketball team. Placing second in district play, the Texans advanced to the regional final for the first time in program history where Wimberley fell to La Marque. This year, Wimberley enters the first half of the 20252026 season ranked No. 7 in the state and currently holds a 17-1 overall record.
The Texans softball team also made a deep run to the playoffs. Wimberley finished the season with a 15-19 overall record and a third place finish in district play. But in the postseason, the Texans advanced to the regional semifinals for the first time in many years, defeating Manor New Tech and Cuero before falling to Zapata.
The Texans football team also had a great season while continuing their winning ways under new leadership. With Doug Warren retiring in the summer, new head coach Wesley Lambert took over the program to start a new era of Texan football. The Lambert tenure started off in thrilling fashion as Wimberley pulled off the largest comeback in program history with a 36-35 win over archrival Canyon Lake after trailing 35-7. The Texans played in eight one-possession games as Wimberley advanced to the regional semifinals where they fell to state-semifinalist Sinton.
The Wimberley Lady Texans basketball team also had a successful season, finishing with a record of 25-9 and placing third in district play.
Wimberley defeated Manor New Tech 63-11 to capture the Bi-District championship before falling to Cuero in the Area round.
