Most Hays County cities see higher sales tax allocations despite monthly dips

San Marcos and most Hays County cities saw higher sales tax allocations compared to last year, continuing an overall upward trend in year-to-date revenue despite a few monthly declines.

The sales tax rate allocation given by the Office of the State Comptroller for the city of San Marcos is 1.5%.

The sales tax allocation for December, representing sales made in October in San Marcos, has gone up 2.36% compared to the same month last year.

The amount allocated to the city for sales made in November is $3,248,125, down from $3,173,053 for the same period in the previous year.

The amount of allocations for the entire year to date is up 0.49% from last year.

Year-to-date, the city received a total of $38,975,761 in allocations, and year-to-date for 2024 was $38,782,545.

The tax rate allocation for unincorporated Hays County is 0.5%. The allocation for December, representing sales made in October for the county, is $2,956,585, which is up 5.20% from last year in the same period last year when it received $2,810,382. The payment to the county year to date is $34,039,519, which is up 5.66% from last year. In 2024, Hays County received $32,214,961 for the year by this time. Almost all of the cities in Hays County — except Buda, Mountain City and Wimberley — are up from last year for this tax allocation period, and every city in the county is up for the year-to-date allocations.

Here’s how the rest of the county’s municipalities fared:

• Buda: Monthly allocation is $1,213,593, down 1.09%. Year-todate total is $13,309,232, up 2.49%.

• Dripping Springs: Monthly allocation is $426,771, up 4.31%. Year-to-date total is $4,992,177, up 5.36%.

• Hays City: Monthly allocation is $3,875, up 110.04%. Year-to-date total is $53,188, up 54.26%

• Kyle: Monthly allocation is $1,579,072, up 8.72%. Year-to-date total is $19,480,628, up 7.55%

• Mountain City: Monthly allocation is $2,309, down 31.72%. Year-to-date total is $36,845, up 3.51%

• Niederwald: Monthly allocation is $17,183, up 2.06%. Year-to-date total is $222,140, up 17.18%.

• Uhland: Monthly allocation is $87,966, up 79.69%. Year-to-date total is $1,113,360, up 91.7%

• Wimberley: Monthly allocation is $131,601, down 4.07%. Year-todate total is $1,672,176, up 7.02%.

• Woodcreek: Monthly allocation is $10,192, up 25.45%. Year-to-date total is $115,323, up 8.64%.

Buda, Kyle, Uhland and San Marcos have a sales tax rate of 1.5%. The sales tax rate in Dripping Springs is 1.25%, and it is 1% in Hays City, Mountain City, Niederwald, Wimberley and Woodcreek.
