As the holiday season comes to an end and the bells stop ringing outside of local stores, it’s important to look back at all that the community accomplished together. The Salvation Army has been a light of hope for many San Marcos residents. Located at 1346 Thorpe Ln, the non-profit’s branch has been a source of assistance and relief for those in need. This year marked another successful service season.

On Dec. 19, the organization distributed their Angel Tree gifts to local kids. Over 263 gifts were given out to children in need. In addition, the Salvation Army provided gifts for the San Marcos Housing Authority and the Hays Caldwell Women’s Center. Children were able to meet Santa and get a picture during the gift pickup.

“We’d like to thank the San Marcos Premium Outlet mall, Walmart San Marcos, Walmart Kyle, Home Depot Kyle and THRC, The Gym of the Hill Country for sponsoring angel trees this year,” said Salvation Army Service Center Manager Lisa Cruz. “Also Home Depot Kyle and New Zion Baptist Church for volunteering to help wrap the gifts.”

The organization also hosted two Silver Bell events this year. One was hosted at Springtown Villa, a Section 8 senior facility. Volunteers provided gifts in partnership with Texas State University. Students at TXST were able to pick a name of a senior at the Student Involvement Center and buy a gift for them. The Salvation Army helped pick up and deliver the gifts and hosted a Christmas party for residents with special guest the man himself with the long white beard.

With the help of a blanket drive from Home Depot Kyle, the Salvation Army was able to help the San Marcos Rehabilitation Center as well, providing each resident with a new blanket.

“It was such a blessing to be able to do so much this year for Christmas and it was also amazing to see the giving nature that this community has for people in need,” Cruz said.
