Texas State won their first road game of the season, defeating the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks 84-79. The Bobcats improve to 9-7 for the season and 2-2 in conference play.
”We responded. That’s all that I asked of our guys over the last 48 hours… to respond,” Head Coach Terrence Johnson said. “In life you are going to get knocked down, but you can choose to respond or not and I’m proud that we chose to respond today.
”A total team effort. We had the right combination of good guard play, interior defense and relentless rebounding. If we can get that night in and night out, I like our chances. I’m proud of these guys. We’ll enjoy this one for now and get back to the drawing board on Monday. Good road win for the ‘Cats.”
Texas State trailed at 94 early in the first half before going on a 11-3 run to take their first lead of the game at 1512.
The Bobcats failed to give up their lead in the first half, pushing the deficit up to 44-33 with less than two minutes remaining in the half.
ULM made a late comeback to trim the Bobcats lead to 46-40.
The Warhawks made it a one-possession game many times during the second half but Texas State prevented ULM from taking back the lead.
Texas State pushed their lead out to 78-68 with less than four minutes remaining in the game en route to a 84-79 win.
Senior Mark Drone led the game in points with a team high 24, shooting 9-14 from the field.
Freshman D.J. Hall was second in scoring with 17 points and led the team in rebounds with 7. Senior Jalen Bolden was third in scoring with 13 followed by junior Kaden Gumbs with 12.
Both Drone and Gumbs had six rebounds with Gumbs leading the team in assists with seven.
Texas State returns to play Thursday on the road against Southern Miss.
