Rattlers fall in overtime to Buda Johnson

SMHS BOYS BASKETBALL

In a thrilling game to start both the New Year and district play, the Rattlers fell to rival Buda Johnson 60-56 in overtime.

San Marcos falls to 1113 overall and 0-1 in district play while Johnson improves to 13-11 and 1-0 in district play.

The Rattlers and the Jaguars were deadlocked at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter before remaining tied at halftime at 26-26.

In the third quarter, the Rattlers outscored the Jaguars 20-7 to take a 46-33 lead going into the fourth quarter. However, Johnson made their comeback, outscoring San Marcos 20-7 in the fourth to tie the game at 53-53.

Johnson was able to put away San Marcos in overtime to seal the Rattlers’ defeat at 60-56.

Senior Tim Cooper led the team in scoring with a team-high 20 points followed by junior Jerimiah Josiah with 12 and senior Peter Aguilar with 11.

Cooper was hot from the three-point line, shooting 5-9 from the arc.

Josiah led the team in rebounds with 13 including 10 defensive rebounds to complete the double-double. Senior Jordan Bernal led the team in assists with six.

The Rattlers will hunt for their first district win of the season when San Marcos goes on the road to Schertz Clemens to battle the Buffaloes. The Buffaloes enter the game with a 18-4 overall record and a 0-1 district record following their loss to archrival Cibolo Steele 75-66 last Friday.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Clemens High School in Schertz.
