San Marcos welcomes 2026 with annual Polar Bear Plunge
What better way to start the New Year than an cold jump into the San Marcos River, one of the city’s most treasured natural assets? The annual Polar Bear Plunge returned on Jan. 1, drawing San Marcos residents and visitors alike to ring in the new year with a splash in Sewell Park on the Texas State campus.
Despite the event’s chilly reputation, the plunge had a great turnout. Participants took the plunge in relatively mild conditions, with temperatures on New Year’s Day reaching a high of 75 degrees. The river, which remains a constant 72 degrees year-round, offered a refreshing but manageable dip.
