2026 is ‘Year of the Ficus’ kicking off National Houseplant Appreciation Day

As plant enthusiasts prepare for National Houseplant Appreciation Day on Jan. 10, the National Garden Bureau is giving them another reason to celebrate: 2026 has officially been named the “Year of the Ficus.” From the iconic Fiddle Leaf Fig that dominated interior design trends to the resilient Rubber Tree and the elegant Ficus Audrey, the Ficus genus remains the undisputed royalty of the indoor jungle. With a Ficus native to nearly every continent, this diverse family offers a variety for every skill level and aesthetic.

“Ficus are everywhere because they are incredibly adaptable and stylistically versatile,” said Diane Blazek, Executive Director of the National Garden Bureau. “Whether you want a 10foot statement tree like the Ficus lyrata or a delicate trailing vine like the Creeping Fig, there is a Ficus for everyone. 2026 is the perfect time to rediscover these classic beauties.”

Why Ficus is the “It” Plant for 2026: Diverse Textures: Beyond the “Weeping Fig,” new trendy cultivars like the variegated ‘Shivereana’ (Moonlight) and the triangle-leaved Ficus triangularis offer unique geometric patterns for modern homes.

Wellness Benefits: With their large leaf surface areas, varieties like the Rubber Tree (Ficus elastica) are powerhouses for indoor greenery.

Longevity: Ficus varieties are “legacy plants,” often living for decades and growing alongside the families that tend them.

Expert Tips for a Happy Ficus: To ensure success during the Year of the Ficus, the National Garden Bureau recommends three golden rules: More Light is Better: While they tolerate medium light, Ficus thrive within four feet of a bright window.

Consistency is Key: Avoid placing plants near drafts. Stress (like sudden temperature changes) is the primary cause of the “shattering” or leaf drop that Ficus are known for.

Clean the Leaves: Wiping dust off large-leaf varieties helps the plant photosynthesize more efficiently, keeping it vibrant and healthy.

The National Garden Bureau is a nonprofit organization that serves as the primary bridge between the horticulture industry and the home gardener. By tapping into a vast network of professional growers and breeders, NGB provides expert- level education and inspiration to help people transform their homes and gardens with the best plants and products on the market.
