No. 16 rank Texans blowout Gonzales in final non-district game

The No. 16 ranked Texans dominated the Gonzales Apaches as Wimberley brought home another road victory, winning 84-36.

Wimberley improves to 23-2 for the season before starting district play Friday.

The Texans are off to the best start in program history and have dominated opponents in nondistrict play.

One of the keys to Wimberley’s success has been the offense that has been scoring at a blistering pace. Through 25 games, the Texans have averaged 69.6 points per game, the best in District 26-4A. The secondhighest scoring offense in the district is Davenport, averaging 62.7 points per game.

Senior Paul Gumbert-Mendoza leads the team in scoring average with 19.8 points per game followed by junior Reece Wortham with 13.3 and junior Nathan Baker at 12.4.

Gumbert-Mendoza also leads the team in rebounds per game at 4.3 while leading the team in assists per game at 4.3, and steals per game at 2.8.

Defensively, the Texans have been holding opponents to an average of 43.9 points per game in non-district play, the third lowest in the district behind Fredericksburg and New Braunfels Long Creek.

Wimberley starts district play on the road Friday against arch-rival Canyon Lake. The Hawks enter the game with a 13-11 overall record, coming off a win over the Comfort Bobcats 58-41. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday at Canyon Lake High School.
