Man arrested for assaulting 12-year-old child

A San Marcos man was arrested by the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office for repeatedly assaulting his 12-year-old child.

Around 10 p.m. on Jan. 10, deputies responded to a reported physical disturbance on Archers Way, in the eastern part of San Marcos located in Guadalupe County, involving a juvenile victim. The investigation determined that the child was physically assaulted by his father, 34-year-old Larry Vela III of San Marcos. The suspect allegedly struck the child multiple times in the face, causing visible injuries, and strangled the child to the point of impeding his ability to breathe.

“This was a violent and inexcusable act against a child,” Sheriff Joshua Ray said. “Anyone who harms a child will be held fully accountable. We will not tolerate child abuse in this county, and we will aggressively pursue justice for victims.”

Vela III was arrested and charged with:

• Injury to a Child

• Assault – Impeding Breath or Circulation

• Continuous Violence Against the Family A spokesperson with the Sheriff ’s Office said the charge of Continuous Violence Against the Family is based on evidence of two or more acts of violence against the victim within the past 12 months.
