LOCAL ARTS

It’s a new year and that means sign-ups are live for the San Marcos Studio Tour hosted by MotherShip Studios. This will be the fourth consecutive year that the arts organization has put together a two-weekend art extravaganza throughout the city.

The tour takes place the first two weekends of FROM

MOTHERSHIP

April, when local artists open up their studios to the public to see how they make their work and why. This year marks the launch of their brand new application website, which allows artists to make a profile and save their information during the sign-up process.

Funded in part by the San Marcos Arts Commission, this event is community born and bread with MotherShip Studios partnering with local businesses for events and to highlight artists who might not have a home studio.

The 2025 Studio Tour saw over 80 artists tour spots and over a dozen local businesses participating on the map.

“Every year is bigger and better! I’m excited about the big group hubs this year, bringing multiple artists together in one spot,” MotherShip Board member Karly Schlievert said. “I believe in community and there’s no community stronger than the arts community. Coming together through creativity gives us all so much joy and purpose in this chaotic life and that’s so important.”

The tour brings in art lovers from all over Texas to explore what the San Marcos art scene has to offer.

“I think the tour has a very unifying impact on the Central Texas art scene. I think that when you have an event where all the artists are participating and they can claim it as their own and claim that they’re a part of this greater event, then it increases their sense of community and sense of belonging as well as broadens people’s awareness of artists in their own town,” MotherShip co-founder Jacqueline Overby said.

MotherShip Studios is a women-built, owned and operated art space in Central Texas founded in 2020. Located inside an industrial warehouse park along San Marcos Highway 80, they offer affordable studio spaces for local artists and various community programs hosted inside a 360-square-foot gallery space with eight surrounding artist studios.

The tour will take place April 4, 5, 11 and 12 with a kick off party on Friday, April 1 at MotherShip Studios featuring a community gallery of all the artists on tour.
