The freezing weather this weekend is the perfect chance to relax in front of the home screen and watch a couple of Texas movies on Kanopy, available for free with your SM library card.
“Paris, Texas” is a fine flick by Wim Wenders, with wonderful cinematography by Robbie Muller. But none of the scenes were actually filmed in Paris, Texas. The name is more of a mythical place to the characters, who moodily tromp around places like Big Bend, Marathon and Ft. Stockton, even downtown Houston, thinking that maybe they were in Paris or maybe heading in that direction… However, the characters really have no idea where they are, spiritually, mentally or physically, a pretty common scenario for Wim Wenders and other European art house directors trying to make sense of the American Dream.
Another Texas movie that’s been in my queue for ages is “There Will Be Blood,” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who seems to be an Oscar favorite this year with “One Battle After Another.” Many times, I’ve clicked on the icon for “TWBB,” realized that it’s almost three hours long, then watched something else. But with these cold temperatures, it’s time to tackle the epics!
