It’s here at last! The Third Annual San Marcos Music Awards ceremony takes place this Friday, January 30, at the Price Center. The red carpet begins at 5:30 p.m. and the ceremony starts at 6. To complete the gala evening, the ceremony includes performances by past awards winners, along with refreshments. Your $50 admission includes five food and drink coupons, with more available for purchase throughout the evening. Tickets are only $25 for SMMA members, and memberships are still available. Tickets can be purchased in advance through KZSM.org, or at the door.
Of the 26 awards to be distributed, two will recognize exceptional community service. The Golden Martian Award honors the best service from a member of the San Marcos music community. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a San Martian who has spent many years promoting our diverse community and vibrant culture.
The nominees for these awards exemplify significant contributions to the life of our community. Nominees for the Golden Martian Award include Kevin Adams, who oversaw the community garden, taught many people how to properly grow food, and now manages the Saturday Morning Farmer’s Market; Ricky Fullen, creator of the Frights and Sounds music festival and vocalist for HateWaker; EZ Maldonado, host of the Songwriter’s Night at Tantra and vocalist for Loose Screws and Rusty Hearts; Metal Mark Moniz, host of “Metal Mark Live,” founder of Metal Fest and organizer of the successful KZSM toy drive; and Missoula Slim (John Gilliam), gifted singer/songwriter, regular at Cheatham Street, and a board member at the Cheatham Street Music Foundation.
Ricky Fullen, Mark Moniz, and Missoula Slim have all also been nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award, along with Ace Pepper, who fronts his popular blues/rock band and operates JAMS guitar shop, and Rob Roark, “the radio guy,” who tirelessly seeks out and shares all the voices of San Marcos on his radio shows.
Each of these nominees has enriched the life of our community, providing not just food and entertainment but also opportunities for growing, learning, and being heard. Join us Friday to congratulate the winners and to celebrate all of the nominees and acknowledge their contributions.
By enjoying this very special evening, you’ll not only experience the excitement of discovering the winners - you’ll also be supporting KZSM, your True Community Radio station, helping us share the many voices of our very creative community.
