The Art Squared Arts Market will take place, with new summer hours in July and August, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the historic Hays County Courthouse lawn.
The featured artist of the month is Jay Willbur, who was born and raised in Battle Creek, Michigan. He doesn’t remember a time he didn’t paint or draw, although he didn't pursue it as a career until he lost his job of 20 years. At the age of 45 with the backing of his wife, Evelyn, he began to exhibit his art.
“I find painting to be photography with the hands,” Willbur said. “A simple rural scene sparks a peaceful restful feeling that I like to convey to the viewer. Along with seeking peace in a hectic world through landscapes, I also enjoy painting unique ordinary people. There is a connection with the image and my soul that I want the viewer to feel.”
The featured nonprofit organization of the month is CASA of Central Texas. When a child enters the foster care system because his or her home is no longer safe, a judge may appoint a committed volunteer to help. That volunteer is called a Court Appointed Special Advocate, or CASA. CASA volunteers are screened, highly trained and then appointed by judges to represent and advocate for a child’s best interests in the child protection system. To find out more, visit CASA's website.
There will not be live music in the afternoon due to reduced summer hours, but Art Squared will host the Art Supply Swap from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside the courthouse. Bring in your extra art supplies and swap them out with other local artists to help conserve and recycle supplies in the community.
The Downtown Walkabout will also be taking place Saturday from 4-7 p.m. at various locations and businesses downtown. The event is free, family-friendly, and features businesses with expanded hours or specials, street artisans and pop-up shops, free pedicab rides, live outdoor music, and more residents and visitors alike are invited to “Eat, Stroll, and Vibe” as they walkabout in downtown.
The Art League will be hosting a live art demo inside Cardinal Frame and Art from 4-7 p.m. during the Second Saturday Downtown Walkabout. Local artist Lisa McPike Smith will demonstrate how to create custom rubber stamps, along with tips and tricks for using speed ball inks and ink pads as well as clay. The demonstration is free of charge.
