Wimberley Players announce auditions for political comedy

Wimberley Players announce auditions for political comedy

The Wimberley Players will hold auditions later this month for an upcoming production of a sharp, timely political comedy that skewers modern campaigns while celebrating the messy heart of democracy.

Audit ions will take place Sunday, Feb. 23, and Monday, Feb. 24, from 7–10 p.m. by appointment only at The Wimberley Players, 450 Old Kyle Road. The production will be directed by Whitney Marlett.

Video auditions will also be accepted through midnight on Feb. 23. Actors unable to attend in person should contact the producer at theoutsider@wimberleyplayers. org to make alternate arrangements.

All auditioning actors must complete the online appointment form at tinyurl. com/mtu4eh43, including submission of headshots, résumés, and video files or links if applicable.

Actors should prepare a oneminute comedic monologue and be ready for cold readings from the script. Callback auditions, if needed, will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m.

The play is set in the present day in the office of a newly elected governor of a small state. Ned Newley doesn’t even want the job — he’s terrified of public speaking and polling disastrously. But a veteran political consultant sees potential in what may be the worst candidate ever to run for office. What follows is a fastpaced, laughoutloud comedy that takes aim at the machinery of politics while asking what voters are really looking for in a leader.

Rehearsals will begin with a table read on Sunday, March 1, from 7–10 p.m., with full rehearsals starting the following week based on cast availability. Technical rehearsals are scheduled for April 18–19, followed by dress rehearsals April 21–23. Performances will run April 24 through May 17, with Friday and Saturday evening shows at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. A total of 12 performances is planned. All actors will receive a stipend.

The cast includes the following roles:

• Paige Caldwell (female, 20s–40s): A sharp, confident professional pollster who views politics as a series of contests to be won.

• Dave Riley (male, 30s–40s): The governor’s earnest and intelligent chief of staff, idealistic despite years in government.

• Louise Peakes (female, 30s–50s): A likable but inept temporary executive assistant whose natural charisma makes her oddly electable.

• Ned Newley (male, 50s–60s): The newly elected governor — capable, intelligent, and utterly lacking in confidence.

• Arthur Vance (male, 50s–60s): A seasoned political consultant whose theatrical ego is matched by genuine enthusiasm and charm.

• Rachel Parsons (female, 30s): A seasoned TV reporter — sharp, honest, and wryly cynical.

• A.C. Petersen (male, 30s–50s): A quiet television cameraman who prefers observation over interaction.
