Texas State finished their first tournament of the season, playing at the Kajikawa Classic in Arizona. After wrapping up the tournament with a 3-2 record here are some key takeaways from this past weekend.

Power-hitting

Head Coach Ricci Woodard mentioned before the season this year’s lineup will have more power compared to last year. The early returns are spot on so far.

The Bobcats finished the tournament with a slugging percentage of over .500 with four different Bobcats hitting home runs, and seven different Texas State batters hitting gaining extra base hits. Compared to their first home tournament last season where the Bobcats scratched across nine runs, Texas State put across 27 runs in their first four games against tougher competition.

The competition is about to set-up for Texas State, but the Bobcat offense has shown some improvement from last season.

Pitching ups and downs.

Things started off strong for the Bobcats pitching staff at the beginning of Classic. The Bobcats had an ERA below 3.50 in their first three games, including holding Arizona State to their lowest run output of the Kajikawa Classic.

But on the final day, the Bobcats gave up eight earned runs against Memphis then four earned runs in a 7-1 loss to Northwestern.

With three more tournaments on the horizon for Texas State, we see if the pitching staff can finish out tournaments on a strong note.

The road doesn’t get any easier

When Texas State released their non-conference schedule, it was clear the Bobcats were not here to just chill on the banks of the San Marcos River.

The State’s Up Invititaitonal will feature three P4 teams in Clemson, BYU and Arkansas while the Bobcats will host Wichita State twice.

The loaded non-conference schedule means the Bobcats will need to stack up wins against quality opponents in order to improve their RPI.
