GAMBLING WITHOUT THE GUILT

One of my favorite events of the year is happening this weekend, and for the first time in a while, I won’t be there. Feel free to pause for a brief moment of sympathy. That said, don’t worry too much about me. I’ll be taking my daughters on their first ski trip, which should be both magical and exhausting. Still, as a member of the Rotary Club of San Marcos, I’d be remiss if I didn’t strongly encourage you to attend Casino Night at the Central Texas Wing of the Commemorative Air Force at the San Marcos Regional Airport.

If you’ve never been, the setting alone is worth the price of admission. The hangar, said to be the only World War II Air Force hangar still housing World War II aircraft, creates an atmosphere you just can’t replicate. There’s something undeniably cool about standing beneath the wing of a historic airplane, rolling the dice at a craps table and feeling like you’ve wandered onto the set of a James Bond movie. All that’s missing is the tuxedo unless you bring that too.

Best of all, this is the rare chance to gamble without regret. You can spend a few dollars, have a great time and support Rotary scholarships and local service projects without the fear of going home empty-handed. The night also features multiple raffles with plenty of prizes, including a pair of twocarat natural diamond earrings valued at $15,000. Casino Night is set for Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 and available at the door, with opportunities to purchase additional chips and raffle tickets. I’ll be on the slopes, but this is one event you won’t want to miss.
