Juarez wins gold at State Wrestling Tournament

For just the second time in program history, a San Marcos wrestler is bringing home the gold.

Junior Mila Juarez capped off her dominating season, winning four straight matches to win the UIL State Championship in the 120-lb weight class.

Juarez won her first round matchup 9-2 with three takedowns in the first period. In the state quarterfinals, Juarez secured another win at 6-4 in a thrilling matchup.

Advancing to the state semifinals, Juarez faced her toughest challenge going up against Aylin Pagan of Katy Paetow. Neither wrestler was able to secure a takedown in the first period as both wrestlers entered the second period tied at 0-0.

With Pagan opting to go on top to start the second period, Juarez was able to escape to earn one point. That escape was just enough as Juarez won her semifinal match at 1-0.

Advancing to the championship, Juarez faced Grace Romans of Allen who entered the State Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the 6A 120-lb weight class.

Juarez dominated once again, winning with three takedowns to win 9-3 and win her first state championship.

Juarez is just the second wrestler in program history to win a state championship in wrestling behind Gianna Moreno, who won in 2021 in the 138-lb weight class.
