SAN MARCOS SOCIAL EVENTS
Dosey do on down to the VFW and don’t be shy; square dancing lessons are coming back to San Marcos at 6 p.m. on March 3 at 1701 Hunter Road. The classes run for 15 weeks and are $70 per person. Kids get in free with adults who have paid. The first lesson on March 3 is free for everyone.
Wheel-N-Deals Square Dance Club has been in operation in town for 55 years now, according to Billy Grimsley, one of the club callers.
Grimsley said the group has done classes every year, but the way things will be done this year is a little different. The CALLERLAB association, which manages the calls that they use when dancing, has changed things a bit, and Wheel-N-Deals are also trying to make the dancing more inclusive for all levels.
“Because we lost so many people over the years, we are trying to do something different to make it much easier for people to join and learn and with less time,” Grimsley said.
There are two groups for dancing: mainstream, which is for everyone, and the plus group, which is more advanced. The advanced group dances on Monday night and the mainstream group is on Tuesdays.
Other than being a good time, Grimsley said square dancing is a great way to find that special someone.
“More people get married through square dance than any other thing I know, and I think a lot of it’s because you could just see the people in action and how they relate to other people,” Grimsley said. “You get a chance to see how people interact with other people, how they learn and if they are accepting of changes and work with other people well. It’s a big factor, especially for me, why I love Square Dancing so much, the interaction with so many people.”
This year, Grimsley said the National Square Dance Convention, which is usually held in other states, will be in Texas at the Waco Convention Center. He and his wife are the Assistant General Chairmen for the convention and have been working for the last three years to put it together, and there are already 2,500 dancers signed up.
