The Rattlers’ home opener was spoiled by the Medina Valley Panthers as San Marcos lost 5-2.
San Marcos falls to 42-1 for the season.
“We came in on a high, and I think we lost kind of the momentum after on Sunday,” Head Coach Bryan Webb said. “They were tired after a seven-game week last week and our focus and enthusiasm showed. We didn’t have any energy out on the field and we played real sloppily because of it.” In the first inning, the Rattler defense committed two errors, allowing three runs to come across for the Panthers as Medina Valley went up 3-0.
M Garcia scored the first run for the Rattlers, scoring on a wild pitch to make it a 3-1 game in the top of the third inning.
Medina Valley scored another run in the third inning on a steal of home before scoring in the sixth on an RBI single.
An RBI single by Elijah Ramirez cut into the Rattler deficit in the bottom of the seventh but the comeback fell short as San Marcos dropped their home opener.
“We have this ball game, because in 2010, we had to come back and play a Monday game after two games because of rain and all that stuff,” Webb said. “Everything we’re doing is structuring for the playoffs in case we get into a certain situation.
“I told them in the pregame, this is the biggest challenge of how you come out today and how you play determines what we’re going to have to do in the playoffs if we get there and we didn’t play well today. We started out slow and it just never clicked for us today. We had too many mental mistakes and too many physical mistakes.”
The Rattlers continue non-district play with another weekend tournament in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
San Marcos is scheduled to play Frisco Lone Star and Denton Guyer at Denton Guyer High School on Thursday. On Friday, the Rattlers will play Cypress Bridgeland and Little Elm at Little Elm High School. Saturday San Marcos will be at Pearland and Wylie at Flower Mound High School.
