Conference Tournament Preview: Bobcats look to survive gauntlet

For the final time, Texas State will compete at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament as both the men’s and women’s teams look to make one last run at a conference title.

It’s the second year of the new step-ladder bracket format as both teams will look to run the gauntlet to punch their ticket into the NCAA Tournament.

MBB TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: BOBCATS ENTER THE CHAOS BRACKET 

The chaotic mess that was Sun Belt Men’s Basketball ended in a sixway tie for second place with the Bobcats earning the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament.

Texas State finished the season with a 19-12 overall record and a 11-7 conference record, including winning a program- record 16 home games.

Freshman D.J. Hall has led the team in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.3 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game.

Senior Mark Drone is second in scoring average with 14.0 points per game.

The path for the Bobcats to win their first conference tournament championship since 1997 will not be an easy one, with Texas State needing to win four games in four days. On the Bobcats’ side of the bracket, Texas State will need to defeat both App State and Troy to reach the championship game. The Bobcats beat App State last Friday and split their two-game series with Troy.

WBB: BOBCATS LOOK TO REGROUP 

The Bobcats are limping into the conference tournament on a fivegame losing streak after dropping their final regular season game to Arkansas State 87-53.

Texas State enters the tournament with an 1118 overall record and a 7-11 conference record while being the No. 8 seed in the tournament.

Sophomore Saniya Burks led the team in scoring with an average of 14.5 points per game followed by sophomore Kyra Anderson with 12.8 points per game. Anderson also led the team in rebounding average with 8.2 points per game.

If the Bobcats are to succeed in the tournament, the team must cut down on their turnovers; they are averaging 20.1 per game.

For the Bobcats to advance to the championship game, Texas State must run the gauntlet of beating Marshall, James Madison and Georgia Southern; the ‘Cats are winless against all three teams this season.
