Errors plagued the Rattlers again as San Marcos dropped their district opener to the rival Buda Johnson Jaguars 6-5.

San Marcos falls to 6-71 overall and 0-1 in district play while Johnson improves to 8-3-2 overall and 1-0 in district play.

“We went out here, kicked the ball all around, put runners on, walked the lead-off guys and did everything that we talked about not doing but the effort was still there and we gave ourselves a shot,” Head Coach Bryan Webb said. ”I told them we were down 5-0 and said, ‘Get back in it, let’s pick away, and give ourselves a shot.’ We give ourselves a shot to get back in it. It just didn’t work out for us.

“But just like I told them right now, we’ve got to figure this thing out. We’re putting guys in spots to produce and it’s not happening. Eventually, we’ve got to find those guys. So the effort was there and we’re trying, but we have to quit being afraid and just go play.”

The Rattlers found themselves down in a 5-0 deficit through the first four innings before San Marcos started their comeback.

San Marcos loaded up the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning before scoring their first run on a wild pitch. Andrew Wilson then connected with a two-run RBI single, making it a 5-3 game.

Buda Johnson scored another run in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 6-3 but the Rattlers continued to chip away.

San Marcos loaded up the bases after three walks then scored two runs on a Buda Johnson error following the pick-off attempt. The Rattlers put runners on second and third but the Jaguars escaped the inning on a strikeout.

Buda Johnson loaded up the bases in the top of the seventh but two strikeouts by Charlie Helgeson, then a running catch in the outfield by Jyuan Alonso kept the Jaguars off the scoreboard.

The Rattlers looked to make their comeback in the bottom of the seventh but fell in order as Johnson escaped with the win.

San Marcos ended the game with four errors, leading to three unearned runs scored by the Jaguars.

San Marcos will play their final tournament of the season in San Antonio before restarting district play next week against Schertz Clemens.

The Rattlers will play Del Rio at 3:30 p.m. Thursday before taking on San Antonio Churchill at 6 p.m. San Marcos will then play Del Rio again 12 p.m. Friday then wrap up play 12 p.m. Saturday against San Antonio Stevens.
