BRAINDEAD FOR MONSTERAMA

The San Marcos Daily Record staff gives recommendations on what to do in our community

John Clark

Associate Editor Film nerds may huddle together and name-drop “Citizen Kane,” “The Godfather” or whatever Wes Anderson film happens to be their favorite at the time, but none of these movies can match the adrenaline rush and pure fun of Peter Jackson’s classic comedy/horror flick “Braindead” (aka “Dead Alive”).

Before all of his big-budget spectaculars about short creatures with hairy feet, Jackson made some of the most gleefully gross movies of all time. His first movie “Bad Taste” (1987) was promising, but seemed more like a student film staring his awkward friends pretending to be (and be chased by) zombies. His next movie, “Meet the Feebles” (1989), starred a motley group of puppets doing horrible and disgusting things to each other.. yes, it’s that good. But “Braindead” (1992) was when he really hit his splatter horror stride… “The Lawnmower Scene” in “Braindead” is simply one of the most amazing moments in all of cinema, those snob films included. So ridiculous, so epic, so bloody disgusting… you absolutely have to see it. And squealing and shouting with a group of horror fans is the perfect opportunity. Monday at 7 at Triple Six Social, part of the Monsterama March film series.
