SAN MARCOS CISD
The San Marcos CISD Board of Trustees canceled the May 2026 school board election after no races were contested, leaving one seat vacant and requiring the board to decide how it will be filled.
The election for singlemember districts 1, 2 and 3 was canceled after the filing period closed without any contested races.
Jessica Cain in District 1 and Sandra Lopez in District 3 were the only candidates to file in their respective races and were declared elected to new terms that will run through 2029.
In District 2, incumbent trustee Margie T. Villalpando did not seek re-election and no candidate filed for the seat.
District officials told the board that once the seat is declared vacant, trustees will have two primary options for filling the position: appointing a resident of District 2 to serve temporarily or calling a special election.
If the board chooses to appoint someone, that person could serve until a special election is held. The board could schedule that election either in November 2026 or in May 2027.
An individual appointed to the position would only be able to serve through May 2027 unless they run and win election to the remainder of the unexpired term.
During the meeting, trustees discussed the possibility of creating a public application process for potential appointees that would allow residents of District 2 to submit their interest in serving on the board.
Board members also discussed the timing of a potential election, including whether it would be preferable to hold a special election in November or wait until the district’s traditional May election cycle.
Trustees confirmed that anyone appointed to the position must reside within the boundaries of District 2, which primarily runs along Highway 80 east of Interstate 35. Visit smcisd.net to see the full district map.
Trustees are expected to discuss the process for filling the District 2 vacancy during their regular meeting scheduled for March 23.
