The Rattlers fell in extra innings last Friday, losing to the Schertz Clemens Buffaloes 12-8.
San Marcos falls to 108-1 overall and 0-3 in district play. Clemens improves to 14-5-1 overall and 3-0 in district play. “They’re battling and we’re close but we just have to finish,” Head Coach Bryan Webb said. ”We have to finish the innings. We got to finish them with bats. We did a whole lot of good things tonight, it just didn’t go our way.
“It’s not panic time yet, but it’s getting pretty close to where we have to start winning, winning a whole lot. So I’m not mad at them. We just got to figure it out. Like I said, we’re really close. It’s just we’re waiting for that one break, one bounce to go our way, and it’s coming.”
The Rattlers struck first with an RBI triple from Elijah Ramierez to start before coming across the plate to score another run on an RBI groundout, taking the early 2-0 lead.
Clemens answered in the top of the third inning, loading up the bases three straight walks. After scoring on a bases-loaded walk, the Buffaloes took the lead on a bases-clearing RBI double. A Rattler error allowed another run to come across for the Buffaloes as San Marcos found themselves trailing 5-2.
The Buffaloes tacked on another run on a wild pitch before the Rattlers could answer back.
With the bases loaded on two outs in the bottom of the fourth, San Marcos scored as Charlie Helgeson connected with a two-run RBI double, making the score 6-4.
Back to back basesloaded walks by Jack Vasquez and Andrew Wilson tied the game for the Rattlers at 6-6.
The Buffaloes took back the lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring on a two-run RBI double to go up 8-6.
San Marcos again chopped into the deficit in the bottom of the fifth as Miguel Garcia scored on a walk pitch, making it a one-run game.
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs left, the Rattlers found themselves down a run with runners on first and second.
Juan “Tres” Munos connected with a groundball towards second base but an error by the Buffaloes allowed the ball to sneak into the outfield. Kayden Miranda raced around third base before booking it to home plate and beating the throw home, tying the game at 8-8 to send it into extra innings.
But the Buffaloes scored four runs in the top of the eighth as the Rattlers were unable to overcome the deficit, leading to the defeat at 12-8.
San Marcos returns home Tuesday for a twogame series against the San Antonio East Central Hornets. East Central is 1-2 in district play and 9-8 overall.
First pitch is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at San Marcos.
