After back-to-back losses against Clemens, the Rattlers finally captured their elusive first district win, beating the East Central Hornets in eight innings on a basesloaded walk. San Marcos improves to 11-9-1 overall and 1-3 in district play while East Central falls to 1-3.
“We’ve been bit so many times with bad luck, to get a walk-off walk is perfectly fine with me,” Head Coach Bryan Webb said.
The Hornets took a lead in the first inning with a solo home run. In the bottom of the first, a sacrifice fly from Jyuan Alonso brought in Tres Munos, tying it up.
The Hornets would again take the lead in the second inning, with a bunt to bring in a run. The Rattlers allowed another run due to an error at shortstop, ending the fourth inning 3-1.
Later in the top of the fourth, a wild pitch from the Rattlers allowed another East Central run. East Central scored again in the fifth on a fielder’s choice, which resulted in no outs.
San Marcos started to make their comeback in the bottom of the fifth. Charlie Helgeson walked, loading the bases for Landon Munoz. Munoz earned a walk from Hornets pitcher, walking in Jack Vasquez to make the score 5-2.
Andrew Wilson hustled down to first, beating an error from the shortstop while bringing in another run. Bases would be left loaded as a strikeout ended the inning with the score 5-3.
San Marcos picked up the scoring in the sixth, as Munos walked. Elijah Ramirez hit a grounder between first and second base, bringing Munos all the way home. Vasquez also earned a walk. Helgeson drove one into right field bringing in Ramirez to tie up the game, 5-5, and leaving Vasquez in scoring position. Bases were once again left loaded with a pop fly to end the inning.
Caleb Gomez’ pitching held the Hornets at 5 runs. San Marcos and East Central would enter the eighth inning after a scoreless seventh. Munos started the bottom of the eighth with a walk. Ramirez was hit by a pitch, placing Munos in scoring position. Vasquez walked, loading the bases for clean-up hitter, Helgeson.
Hebleson walked off the game with a basesloaded walk from the Hornets pitcher, bringing Munos in to end the game, winning 6-5.
San Marcos will travel to East Central to play the Hornets this Friday, at 7:00 p.m.
