Recently winter has been making brief reappearances, adding extra curtain calls to make up for a rather lackluster performance this year. But nevertheless, it’s still spring, when our beautiful Hill Country dresses up and calls attention to herself. Every Tuesday morning at 11:30, KZSM 104.1/KZSM.org features locally produced shows that celebrate our environment, offering information and suggesting ways to get involved.
On the first Tuesday of every month, we feature a broadcast produced by the Meadows Center at Texas State, “Come Heck or Hot Water: Resilient Solutions for a Changing World.” As producer Sarah Wingfield explains, the title “is meant to embody the Texan origins of the podcast with a play on a local colloquialism, while evoking a sense of connection and fortitude. The idea behind the title is that come heck or hot water, our team is here to help support and amplify solutions to problems arising from increased temperatures and extreme weather.”
From 11:30 to noon on the second Tuesday of every month, Diane Wassenich of the San Marcos River Foundation hosts “Wonderful World,” featuring news and information about our river and our beloved Hill Country.
“I hope our listeners will learn something wonderful and new about what is going on locally that affects their very own environment that they experience every day” Wassenich explains. On her most recent show, she talked with Robert Mace of the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment here in San Marcos. Mace has been speaking lately at several conferences and legislative hearings about Texas’ difficult water problems, to help people understand the route to groundwater sustainability despite climate changes. “I learn from his explanations and listeners do, too.”
Besides listening and learning how to protect our environment, you can come out and enjoy it with us! Join us this Saturday, March 28, 7-9:30 p.m. in the beer garden at Roughhouse Brewing, 680 Oakwood Loop, for the first concert of the “Hills Are Alive” spring music series. Loose Screws and Rusty Hearts, winners of Best Country two years in a row at the San Marcos Music Awards, will perform, along with The Light Aluminum, an Americana group from Austin.
This free concert is family and pet friendly, with food and drink available for purchase. Seating is limited, so bring a blanket or chair. To help manage crowd size, please RSVP via thehillsarealive. eventbrite. com! In person or on the air, celebrate spring with KZSM!
