A new initiative designed to accelerate breakthrough aerospace and defense technologies from concept to market has launched in the heart of the Central Texas Innovation Corridor.
The Innovation Corridor Defense Accelerator (ICDA) has been established in San Marcos to help high-potential defense and dual-use startups rapidly validate their technologies and connect with the complex defense ecosystem needed for successful industry adoption.
The accelerator was developed following an
outbound marketing trip conducted by the Hays Caldwell Economic Development Partnership team, which identified a partnership opportunity with Starburst Aerospace to anchor a defense-focused innovation hub in the region between Austin and San Antonio.
“The Innovation Corridor is uniquely positioned to support the next generation of aerospace and defense companies,” said Mike Kamerlander, president and CEO of the Hays Caldwell Economic Development Partnership. “We are thrilled to welcome this partnership and the opportunities it will create for startups, investors, and defense stakeholders across our region.”
Powered by Starburst’s global innovation network, the program connects founders with industry partners, advisors, mentors, investors, and defense customers who can help accelerate technology readiness and market entry.
“Innovation in aerospace and defense is accelerating, requiring faster iteration cycles across design, testing, and manufacturing,” said Lukas Oberhofer, U.S. managing director for Starburst. “Texas, and specifically the Austin- San Antonio Innovation Corridor, is one of the few places globally where all three are coming together at scale. With unique access to testing infrastructure, a strong ecosystem of investors, industry, and academia, and in close partnership with the Hays Caldwell Economic Development Partnership, we see this region as a key driver of the next generation of dual-use innovation. Establishing our third U.S. office here was a natural next step.”
Anchored in San Marcos, the accelerator sits in the middle of the rapidly growing corridor between Austin and San Antonio, where a dense concentration of industry, military, government, and research institutions is helping shape the future of defense innovation.
The program is designed for startups developing next-generation defense and dual-use technologies, ranging from prototype-stage ventures to early-growth companies seeking to validate proof-of-concept technologies in realworld defense environments.
Unlike traditional startup programs, the Innovation Corridor Defense Accelerator offers a tailored approach that includes guidance from industry experts, support refining commercial strategies, and assistance navigating the highly regulated defense marketplace.
Participating startups will also have the opportunity to collaborate directly with defense corporations to co-develop, pilot, and validate technologies using feedback from real customers in the defense sector.
“The Austin-San Antonio corridor is emerging as a critical hub for aerospace and defense innovation, driven by a unique concentration of military assets, research institutions, and a rapidly growing base of venture- backed startups,” Oberhofer said.
“The ICDA is built to increase collaboration between these capabilities, accelerating commercial momentum for startups and attracting new capital into the region. This strengthens our ability to create high-quality jobs locally and reinforces the Innovation Corridor’s role in the aerospace, defense, and space economy,” according to Oberhofer.
In addition, companies will gain access to regional testing facilities, research institutions, and a global network of venture capital firms, corporations, and ecosystem leaders. The program will culminate with a Demo Day where participating startups present their solutions to investors and industry decision- makers. The accelerator is focused on technologies across multiple defenserelated sectors, including space systems, aviation, advanced materials, manufacturing, maintenance and repair operations, unmanned systems, communications, cybersecurity, and nextgeneration computing such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum technologies.
By anchoring the accelerator in San Marcos, organizers aim to strengthen the Innovation Corridor’s role as a fast-growing hub for defense innovation while creating new pathways for startups to move cutting- edge technologies into real-world deployment.
