Rattlers sweep East Central in critical district series

The Rattlers completed their sweep of the East Central Hornets, winning Game 2 16-3.

After starting district play 0-3, San Marcos has improved to 2-3 and 129-1 for the season. East Central falls to 8-8 and 1-4 in district play.

San Marcos struck first, scoring on an error before senior Charlie Helgeson hit a two-run RBI single to make it 3-0.

The Hornets tied the game on one swing, hitting a three-run home run to even the score at 3-3.

In the next at-bat, the Rattlers took back the lead on a Helgeson RBI single. Later, San Marcos loaded up the bases before senior Andrew Wilson scored a run after being hit by the pitch.

San Marcos struck again in the top of the fifth when senior Colson Geesee hit a lead-off home run in center field, making it a 6-3 Rattler lead.

Helgeson scored for the Rattlers again in the top of the sixth, hitting another RBI single before Landon Munoz hit an RBI double.

Wilson connected with a three-run home run as the Rattler lead was extended to 11-3.

In the same at-bat, Elijah Ramirez forced a bases-loaded walk before an RBI groundout by Jack Vasquez scored another run to make it 13-3.

Helgeson cleared the bases with an RBI single before he and Ramirez scored on a East Central throwing error to complete a little league home run, making it a 16-3 game.

On the mound, Vasquez got the final three outs as the Rattlers completed their district sweep. Vasquez earned the win, throwing a complete game while allowing four hits, three earned runs, two walks and striking out 10 batters.

Helgeson led the offense, going 4-5 from the plate with a game high five RBIs. Wilson was second in RBIs with four while going 2-4 from the plate.

The Rattlers are back on the road Tuesday for the start of a twogame district series against the Converse Judson Rockets.

The Rockets are coming off being swept by the Cibolo Steele Knights, including losing Friday’s game 20-4. Judson enters the week at 315-1 overall and 0-3 in district play.

First pitch for Game 1 is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Judson.
