Wimberley opened up district play with a rivalry win over Canyon Lake, beating the Hawks 12-6.
The Texans improve to 9-6-1 for the season and 1-0 in district play.
Wimberley jumped on Canyon Lake early in the bottom of the first inning, loading up the bases on a Sage Hall single, Alex Abrusley walk and a Maverick Jacobs hit-by-pitch.
Jacob Abrusley scored the first run for the Texans on a bases-loaded walk followed by another bases-loaded walk by Carter Meeks.
Jake Dewell then broke the game open, hitting a grand slam in left field as Wimberley took a commanding 6-0 lead.
Canyon Lake answered in the top of the second, scoring on a RBI double.
The Texans responded in the same inning as Alex Abrusley hit an RBI single followed by an RBI single by Maverick Jacobs, pushing Wimberley’s lead to 8-1.
Meeks scored another run for the Texans with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, extending the lead to 9-1 The Hawks came roaring back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring runs on two bases-loaded walks and a two-run RBI single as Canyon Lake trailed 9-5.
Sage Hall added to the Texans’ lead in the bottom of the fifth, hitting an RBI groundout before a Canyon Lake error allowed two more runs to score.
Canyon Lake responded with an RBI double in the top of the sixth but were unable to complete the comeback as the Texans won 12-6.
Wimberley will look to complete the two-game sweep Friday as the Texans travel across the Devil’s Backbone to Canyon Lake for Game 2.
First pitch for Game 2 is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Canyon Lake.
