A few years ago, skateboarding legend Tony Hawk was one of the guests on the “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” NPR radio show. The forevernerds on the panel of comedians were searching for some tips on how to be “cooler.”
While Hawk couldn’t perform that particular miracle, he did let them in on a giveaway word that separates the skaters from the geeks. “Fandango is the ‘code word’ of experienced skateboarders when they’re making fun of you,” Hawk told the panel.
If you tell someone you can do backflip fandangos… and that person is nodding and talking about the trick, clearly that person doesn’t know about skateboarding.... There is no such skateboarding trick... it is a signifier word to weed out the dorks.
Now back to the real deal. Texas Hill Country Skate Day happens Saturday from 12 p.m. to midnight at the skatepark at 627 Hopkins. The all-ages event features free games and cash prizes for trick competitions. Should be some awesome skaters... who won’t be doing any fan- dangos.
