City to update Transportation Plan with community input

The city of San Marcos is updating its Transportation Master Plan, and they’d like the community’s feedback.

“The Transportation Master Plan update will guide the future of transportation in San Marcos — helping improve safety, reduce congestion, strengthen connections between neighborhoods and key destinations and support future growth,” the city stated in a Facebook post.

San Marcos Senior Engineer Rohit Vij said that while the first round of virtual engagement for the public is closed, the second round will open in the fall of this year, and there will be an in-person opportunity at Farmer Fred’s Garden Spring Carnival from 6-9 p.m. on April 2 at San Marcos City Park, 170 Charles Austin Dr. Staff will be at community events over the next couple months that will be announced on sanmarcostx.gov/TMP at a later date.

The Transportation Master Plan was updated in 2018, but the new Vision SMTX Comprehensive Plan, which was adopted by council in 2024, requires an update to the existing TMP.

“The updated plan will serve as a guide for maintaining and developing effective travel options, supporting walking, biking and transit, and ensuring the city’s transportation system integrates well with regional transportation options,” Vij said.

Residents will have an opportunity to provide feedback at several popup events, and the city will provide engagement materials and interactive tools on site.
“The city will compile and document all feedback through an engagement summary after every round of engagement,” Vij said. “At the conclusion of the planning and engagement process, the city will develop an engagement report summarizing all public involvement activities and outcomes. The report will highlight key insights and themes from each round of engagement.”
The city is anticipating the new plan to be completed by Fall 2027 or Winter 2028.
For the update, the Vij said the city will conduct the following:
- Public participation and stakeholder consultation
- Data collection and needs assessment
- Transportation modelling and analysis
- Multimodal transportation system alternatives
- Tools and capital improvements plan development
- Transportation design criteria manual update
- Transportation master plan report
There is an interactive engagement map at sanmarcostx.gov/TMP that Vij said “is a tool to gather community input that will be used to enhance and benefit the plan development.” People can provide geospatial comments on the interactive map. Vij said it can be used to build awareness and community understanding, deliver inclusive, accessible and collaborative outreach opportunities, and gather and incorporate meaningful input.
