Texas State took the conference series opener on the road against South Alabama as the Bobcats defeated the Jaguars 5-1.
The Bobcats improve to 23-15 for the season and 5-5 in conference play while South Alabama falls to 23-16 and 7-3 in conference play.
Texas State scored first in the top of the third inning as Katarina Zarate scored on a South Alabama error on the double steal attempt, allowing the redshirt junior to move from third to home while senior Sami Hood moved to third from second.
Later in the at-bat, senior Keely Williams hit a deep flyout to left field, scoring Hood from third on the sacrifice fly to put Texas State up 2-0.
The Jaguars got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on an RBI single, cutting the Bobcat lead to 2-1.
Senior Aiyana Coleman extended the lead in the top of the sixth, connecting with a solo home run for her tenth of the season, making it a 3-1 game.
Williams added insurance runs in the top of the seventh, hitting a two-run double in left-center field to extend the lead.
Junior pitcher Madison Azua closed out the bottom of the seventh, sitting the Jaguars down in order with two strikeouts and a flyout to seal the victory.
Azua earned the win in the circle, throwing a complete game while allowing just four hits, no earned runs, three walks and striking out eight batters.
Williams led the offense, going 2-3 from the plate with three RBIs.
Texas State continues play Friday against South Alabama before finishing the series on Saturday before press time.
