Senior Citizen Volunteer of the Year nominations now open

SAN MARCOS NONPROFITS

The Senior Citizen Volunteer of the Year is chosen annually by the Senior Citizen Advisory Board. Organizations having senior citizen volunteers are urged to nominate their volunteers for this year’s award.

Nominations must be received by May 15 for the award, which will be presented in August. The Award is a function of the Senior Citizens Volunteer Advisory Board, which is appointed by the city council.

This award recognizes San Marcos citizens who are at least 60 years of age whose unpaid volunteer services have made San Marcos a better place to live.

The criteria for the award: - Must reside in San Marcos or the San Marcos Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ); - Must be 60 years of age by August 1, 2026; - Must be involved in unpaid, volunteer activities within the San Marcos community; - Must not serve on the San Marcos Senior Citizen Advisory Board; and - Must agree to the publication of his/her name and photo Paper nomination forms are available at the San Marcos Activity Center.

Online nomination forms can be found at tinyurl. com/bdej87u7 The San Marcos Senior Citizen Advisory Board will also consider such elements as the nominee’s record of service (i.e. volunteer activities, site of service, years having served), and the impact of the activities on the community.

Past recipients include Rose Brooks in 2017, Harvey Miller in 2019, Jeannie Lewis in 2021, Dr. Charles Johnson in 2023, and Larry Patterson in 2024.

Last year’s honoree Larry Patterson served as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Hays County Food Bank, Casa and the America Reads School program at Travis Elementary.

San Marcos is fortunate that so many retirees choose to give of their time and valuable experience to organizations striving to make San Marcos a great place to work and live.
