Poetry event focuses on criminal justice

Poetry event focuses on criminal justice

This evening, San Marcos City Council member Mark Rockeymoore and Mano Amiga organizer Faylita Hicks will read poetry centered around their personal experiences in the Hays County Jail.

“Bards Behind Bars” will take place at The Coffee Bar, 142 N. LBJ Dr., at 7 p.m. and will benefit Hicks’ professional development trip to Los Angeles in August, which is a result of her selection as 2019 Non-Fiction Fellow for the Lambda Literary Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices. Hicks, who was held in the Hays County Jail for 45 days for a bounced check, writes about her experience with the criminal justice system.

The fundraising event suggests donations of $5 per person, though none will be turned away for lack of sufficient funds. According to a press release, Hicks will have chapbooks, photos and commissioned poetry for sale at the event to help meet her fundraising goals.
