Texas State was unable to complete the sweep as the Bobcats fell to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 2-1.
Despite the loss, the Bobcats clinched the series against the Golden Eagles after winning on Friday [7-1] and Saturday [8-1].
“We squared up a lot of balls that went right at people,” Head Coach Ricci Woodard. “The wind held up [a lot of balls so again I think if the wind's not blowing dead straight in, you see some different outcomes here today. But I'm not going to make excuses. We needed to put the ball on the ground a little bit better at different times, and we didn't get the key hit.”
Southern Miss scored first in the top of the second as the Golden Eagles connected with a two-run home run.
The Bobcats got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when senior Sami Hood hit a solo home run to right field, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Texas State put runners on first and second with one out but Southern Miss kept the Bobcats from scoring, making outs on a line out and a fielder’s choice to seal the win for the Golden Eagles.
Pitching the entire game, junior pitcher Madison Azua allowed five hits, two earned runs, one walk and struck out five batters.
Texas State is back home Wednesday against Baylor. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
