Wimberley battles Legacy Ranch in playoffs

Wimberley ended their regular season with a bang, defeating the Davenport Wolves and handing them their first district of the season.

The Texans finish the season with a 22-7-2 overall record and a 7-3 district record. The Texans hosted the district-leading Wolves in their final home game of the regular season..

Wimberley struck the first blow in the top of the first inning when Ella Patek hit a solo home run over the fence in left field to put the Texans up 1-0.

Later in the bottom of the fourth, Morgan Smith added to Wimberley’s lead with an RBI single to make it a 2-0 lead.

The Wolves came roaring back in the top of the fifth, scoring their first run on a solo home run. Later, Davenport scored again on a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 2-2.

The Wolves had a runner on third with two outs but the Texans ended the at-bat on a caught flyout by Emorie Gahan.

But the tie didn’t last long.

In the bottom of the fifth, Patek struck again, hitting an RBI double to score Gahan at first and give the Texans the lead at 3-2.

Davenport had one last chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh but pitcher Charlotte Woodard sat the Wolves down in order, sealing the Texans win.

Grace Strobel earned the win in the circle, pitching five innings allowing five hits, two earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Woodard earned the save allowing one hit, no runs, no walks and striking out two batters.

Earlier in the week, the Texans earned their final road district win, defeating the New Braunfels Long Creek Dragons 115.

Wimberley earns the No. 2 seed from District 26 in the 4A Division II playoffs while Fredericksburg earns the No. 1 seed from District 26. Davenport will head into the 4A Division I playoffs as the No. 1 seed from District 26 and Long Creek earns the No. 2 seed.

The Texans open the playoffs against the Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch Wranglers in the Bi-District round.

The Wranglers finished the season with a 18-12-3 overall record and a 12-2 district record, finishing in second place in District 25 behind Lago Vista.

Wimberley and Legacy Ranch will play in a threegame series to determine the Bi-District champion.

Game 1 will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at Legacy Ranch. Game 2 will be played at 7 p.m. Friday in Wimberley. Game 3, if needed, will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at San Marcos High School.
