Exploring Nature: Rare Bird Sightings

Exploring Nature: Rare Bird Sightings

I don’t know what birds you are seeing at your place, but probably regular avian species such as northern cardinals, titmice and Carolina wrens. With perhaps a blue jay or a cedar waxwing for a change of pace.

But Texas is a mighty big state and some interesting birds have shown up this spring. Let’s review just a few seen in the month of April.

My favorite was a limpkin reported at Hall’s Bayou Ranch located near Galveston. These people are not looking for birders to come on their property for a look-see, however. Online and I imagine in reality, the ranch has posted this notice: “Absolutely No Public Access.”

So you’ll have to see the limpkin somewhere else.

Closer to home, and more open to viewing, a white ibis was seen April 13 at the San Marcos Fish Hatchery, Also not far away, a marbled godwit put in an appearance April 15 at Hornsby Bend, near Austin.

Other Texas rarities in April included a king rail in Cameron, a black-chinned hummingbird at South Padre Island, a purple gallinule in Hidalgo, a snow goose in Williamson, and a cackling goose at Balmorhea Lake in Reeves.

Keep a sharp lookout, there’s really no telling what might show up in our marvelous state of Texas.

I’m hoping for a resplendent quetzal!
