HERITAGE ASSOCIATION OF SAN MARCOS
A historic home rooted in family tradition and neighborhood connection will be among the featured stops on the Heritage Association of San Marcos’ Annual Home Tour, “Heritage & Home: Americana Experience,” on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Located at 130 North Mitchell St., the residence reflects the enduring family stories that define many of San Marcos’ historic neighborhoods. Built by the Taylor family, the home served as the center of their lives for more than 40 years, where they raised four children and created a household filled with family gatherings and community ties.
The home’s story extends beyond its walls. Ruth Taylor’s sister lived next door with her three children, creating a close-knit family environment where cousins and neighbors grew up side by side. Her recent passing marked the closure of a long chapter for a family presence that shaped the character of the street for generations.
In later years, the home passed through several owners — most staying only briefly — before longer- term residents once again settled into the house. One former owner, Barbara Shearman, lived there before more recent residents spent more than a decade enjoying the property and describing it as “a wonderful place to live.”
Today, the Mitchell Street home stands as a reminder that historic houses preserve not only architecture but also the everyday stories of families, neighbors, and community life.
The residence is one of six historic stops featured on this year’s tour celebrating America’s 250th birthday and highlighting the architectural heritage and traditions that make San Marcos unique.
Tickets are $30 in advance at www.Heritage-SanMarcos.org ($35 the day of the tour). Proceeds support the Heritage Association of San Marcos and its mission to preserve the historic structures and districts that make San Marcos one of Texas’ most treasured cities.
Founded in 1975, the Heritage Association of San Marcos (HASM) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving historic buildings, celebrating local culture, and perpetuating the traditions that enrich the community life of San Marcos. Membership is open to anyone interested in supporting historic preservation and the ongoing stewardship of the city’s heritage.
